Istanbul Shore Excursion: Old City, Bazaars & Local Flavors

See more than Istanbul’s famous monuments on a private shore excursion designed around your cruise schedule. Beginning at Galataport, this experience connects the landmarks of the Old City with the historic trade routes, bustling bazaars and everyday flavors that have shaped Istanbul for centuries—all with a carefully planned return to your ship.

Discover Sultanahmet, the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque and the surroundings of Hagia Sophia, then follow the city’s commercial story through the Grand Bazaar, Mahmutpaşa, Tahtakale and the Spice Market. Rather than treating these places as separate sightseeing stops, your guide brings them together through stories of empires, merchants, local traditions and daily life.

Along the way, enjoy 3–4 small and flexible tastings that may include a local bakery specialty, Turkish delight or traditional candy, nuts or spices, and Turkish coffee or tea. The route is adapted to your ship’s schedule, ticket availability and local conditions, allowing you to experience Istanbul’s essential landmarks, historic bazaars and local flavors without worrying about missing your ship.

Itinerary

Galataport Pickup & Journey to the Old City

Meet your private guide at Galataport at the agreed time. Depending on traffic, group mobility and local conditions, travel toward the historic peninsula by tram, on foot or with a prearranged private vehicle. Your guide will plan the day around your ship’s schedule, allowing sufficient time for a comfortable return to the port.

Sultanahmet Square & the Hippodrome

Begin exploring the heart of the imperial city at Sultanahmet Square. Walk through the former Byzantine Hippodrome, once the setting for chariot races, public celebrations and political events. See its surviving monuments while discovering how this area remained at the center of city life through the Byzantine and Ottoman eras.

Blue Mosque & Hagia Sophia

Visit the Blue Mosque, subject to prayer times and visitor access, and discover its graceful architecture and celebrated İznik tiles. Continue through Sultanahmet Square to Hagia Sophia, where your guide will explain the building’s remarkable Byzantine and Ottoman history from the exterior. An interior visit to Hagia Sophia is not part of the standard itinerary but may be considered upon request if your ship’s schedule and ticket availability allow.

Grand Bazaar & Istanbul’s Trading Heritage

Enter the historic Grand Bazaar and discover how commerce developed around its covered streets, workshops and traditional trading districts. Rather than following a fixed shopping route, explore selected sections according to your interests and learn about the merchants, crafts and trade networks that connected Istanbul with the wider world.

Mahmutpaşa & Tahtakale

Follow the lively commercial streets of Mahmutpaşa and Tahtakale to experience a more local side of Istanbul. These neighborhoods are filled with small businesses, street vendors and layers of everyday market culture. Along the way, pause for some of the day’s flexible tastings.

Spice Market & Local Flavors

Explore the colors and aromas of the Spice Market and its surrounding food streets. Learn how spices, nuts, sweets and other goods reached Istanbul through historic trade routes. Depending on availability and your preferences, the experience includes 3–4 small tastings that may feature a bakery specialty, Turkish delight or traditional candy, nuts or spices, and Turkish coffee or tea.

Return to Galataport

Return to Galataport with sufficient time before your ship’s departure. The route and timing will be adjusted throughout the day according to the port schedule, traffic and local conditions.
